Seminole Heights Bicycle Club Inaugural Ride a Success
The morning of
Saturday, February 16, 2008 brought together many members of the Seminole
Heights Bicycle Club. Sixty bicycle enthusiasts took to the roads of the
quiet, shady neighborhood along the Hillsborough River.
The diverse group of
cyclists, from Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio to “kids on BMX bikes to adults on
hybrids to couples on tandems, celebrated the newly-minted bicycle club’s
inaugural ride with a victory lab around Lake Roberta,” said Alan Snel,
organizer of the Seminole Heights Bicycle Club.
The six mile ride also
included stops for coffee and water at Patterson Street Park, where “Mayor
Iorio commended
Seminole Heights as a great neighborhood, cited the new bike lanes and road
improvements of Nebraska Avenue and even said she will work on getting bike
lanes painted on Platt Street in the city,” said Snel.
All in all, the ride was
a great start for the Seminole Heights Bicycle Club and plans are already in
the works for future rides. For more information on the club and upcoming
events, please visit

Premier “Green” Event at USF

The University of South Florida is set to host a
premier “green” event April 7-12, 2008. The week will begin with
“Sustain-A-Bull,” a campaign to raise awareness and encourage action on
issues promoting sustainable healthy communities. The “Getting Green by
Going Green” Expo will round out the week, providing the community with the
necessary tools to “go green” in Tampa Bay.
During the “Sustain-A-Bull” campaign, USF colleges at the
Tampa campus will host special “green” events. Events include the
documentary Too Hot Not to Handle, with commentary by Ms. Jan
Roberts, director of community initiatives and the presentation From
Green Homes to Green Museums, by students for Green Infrastructure for
Sustainable Communities.
The “Getting Green by Going Green” Expo will be held at the
USF Sun Dome from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 12. The event will feature
speakers, workshops, music, and movies on alternative energy, recycled
materials, and green products of all kinds.
Going Green Tampa Bay is
a joint effort of the University of South Florida and the Hillsborough
County City-County Planning Commission. For more information, please visit

NNTA Members are Clean Air Partners
The
University of South Florida, the Center for Urban Transportation Research,
and the University Mall are members of the Clean Air Partnership (CAP).
The CAP aims to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution
in the greater Tampa Bay area through employer participation in the
program. In hopes of reducing the number of work-related single-occupancy
vehicle trips and encouraging the use of clean air fuels, CAP offers two
programs: the Commute Options program and the Green Fleet program.
To participate in the Commute Options program, employers must
promote a variety of commuting alternatives to employees. Carpools,
vanpools, flexible work hours, transit passes, and bicycling programs are
just a few of the options.
The Green Fleet program involves the use of alternative fuel
vehicles (AFV’s) and clean fuels. Obtaining a collection of hybrid electric
vehicles (HEVs) for employee use is one option. Another possibility is to
utilize biodiesel, ethanol or natural gas in the fleet or promote the use of
these clean fuels to employees.
