HART Opens the Doors on Transit Plans at

Open House Thursday, November 15

Residents Invited to Comment on HART Initiatives Including

Rapid Transit, Bus Stop Improvements

Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) is hosting an open house on planning studies and invites the community to learn more about the future of local transit.

     DATE: Thursday, November 15, 2007
     TIME: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Seminole Heights Baptist Church, 801 East Hillsborough Avenue, Tampa
Served by HART Route 2 - Nebraska Avenue and Route 34 - Hillsborough Avenue.

Interested citizens can drop by the open house anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to learn more about two important HART initiatives: the Transit Emphasis Corridors Study and the Accessibility Study. The Bus Rapid Transit plan, recommended Bus Rapid Transit bus routes and bus stop improvements will be presented at the meeting.

HART's Transit Emphasis Corridors Study is looking at Bus Rapid Transit improvements on two corridors:

·        North-South Corridor: Nebraska Avenue and Fletcher Avenue

·        East-West Corridor: 56th Street, Hillsborough Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Himes Avenue and Boy Scout Boulevard

Bus Rapid Transit improvements include longer hours and more frequent bus service, faster travel and better service reliability, real-time passenger information, new stations and unique vehicles.

The Accessibility Study is evaluating the more than 4,400 bus stops and facilities throughout HART's system to determine current conditions and to develop a plan to make the stops and facilities more accessible, safe and user-friendly.

For more information on these studies, please contact the HART Planning Department at (813) 223-6831.

Tampa Receives Honorable Mention as "Bicycle Friendly Community"

The League of American Bicyclists honored cities from across the nation this month with the Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) designation. Santa Cruz, California and Steamboat Springs, Colorado received the top spots, with Tampa, Florida earning an honorable mention.

The BFC program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate their quality of life and transportation network. The League awards this four-year designation to communities that have made impressive, measurable efforts to integrate bicyclists into the community. This designation is one with real meaning-it is difficult to earn and important to renew.

Since the program's inception in 2003, 174 communities have applied and 70 have earned the designation. "In this round, eight communities were given honorable mentions," League Executive Director Andy Clarke said. "It is important to recognize communities as they begin to build bicycle friendliness into their network. But a designation only goes to communities with established records in two or more of the five categories."

The five key areas reviewers assess are education, engineering, enforcement, encouragement, and evaluation/planning. Mary Helen Duke submitted the detailed on-line application for the City of Tampa.

Zipcar and Flexcar Agree to Merge

Zipcar and Flexcar, leading car sharing providers, announced October 31, 2007 the companies will merge. Together these two companies will represent an international network able to deliver new member benefits and accelerated growth to the burgeoning car sharing industry. The combined company will operate under the Zipcar brand and be headquartered in Cambridge, MA, under the leadership of Zipcar's chairman and chief executive, Scott Griffith.

Zipcar and Flexcar currently operate car sharing programs, providing members with on-demand access to a diverse fleet of vehicles conveniently located throughout major metropolitan areas. To use the service, members reserve a vehicle online or via a mobile device, use a smartcard to open the doors, take their trip, and then return the car at the end of the reservation. A simple hourly or daily fee covers gas, insurance, maintenance, parking and 24-7 emergency service. The merger will come at a time when car sharing is increasingly acknowledged as a smart urban lifestyle choice and transportation alternative. Today, with growing competition within the industry, and more than 30 independent car sharing companies operating in the U.S. alone, the combined Zipcar will have a stronger base from which to compete, particularly against leading car rental firms' product introductions targeted at the car sharing industry.

"This merger will be a classic example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts," said Scott Griffith, CEO, Zipcar. "The combined company will provide our members with increased benefits and improve our ability to expand into new markets. The management and employees of both companies are proud to be contributing to the progression of the industry, and we believe as a combined company, we will be more effective in making car sharing a mainstream form of transportation in cities throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe."

Zipcar currently operates in New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver, Toronto and London while Flexcar operates in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. Both companies provide car sharing on college campuses where traffic congestion and limited parking are frequent challenges.

"When we acquired Flexcar in 2005 our goal was to bring car sharing to more people in more places," said Steve Case, Chairman of Revolution LLC. "The Zipcar merger will accelerate this effort, and we look forward to continuing our commitment to this important industry."

"With very little geographic overlap, the combined company will serve its members by taking the best attributes and features of each company and making a great service even better," said Mark Norman, formerly Flexcar's CEO, who will assume the roles of president and COO of Zipcar at closing.

Upon merging, member benefits will include:

·        Award winning technology: Members will access the vehicles through Zipcar's Z3D, industry-leading technology. The proprietary platform fully connects the information flow between vehicles, members and Zipcar.com

·        Universal membership: The Zipcar membership will enable the self-service reservation of any vehicle in any city in the combined Zipcar, Flexcar network simply by using the Zipcar.com website or mobile interface.

·        Premium insurance: All members will be covered under an industry leading insurance plan with limits of $300,000 per accident.

·        More convenience: Especially in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco (markets where both companies currently operate), the combined fleets will give existing members of each service hundreds more locations from which to choose. In addition, members will now be able to reserve cars in more cities.

·        Green options: Both companies have a commitment to environmental responsibility, and now members will have access to more hybrid vehicles

Car sharing programs are proven to have significant positive environmental and social impacts. National studies show that each shared car replaces up to 20 privately owned vehicles. Car sharing members report driving significantly less and are more likely to walk, bike, and use public transportation. Members also report savings of $500 or greater per month compared to the average cost of owning and operating a car in the city, and businesses have saved thousands of dollars by eliminating company fleets or augmenting their transportation offerings with car sharing programs.

HART Driver Named Best In State

Operator Whitfield Recognized by Florida Public Transportation Association

People who ride Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) buses every day know its drivers are some of the best in the business. Now, one HART operator has claimed the title of best in the state, as the Florida Public Transportation Association bestowed its prestigious Driver of the Year award to HART's Robert Whitfield at a banquet held in Orlando on October 23rd.

Robert's achievement marks the second time in three years a HART driver has been named the FPTA's Driver of the Year. HART veteran Patrick McKeon received the award for 2005.

Robert has more than twenty-six years of service with HART, joining the agency in June of 1981. He is a two-time recipient of HART's Driver of the Month award, first in April 1988 and again in December 2006. In June of this year, Robert received special recognition for working on HART's Bus Stop Evaluation and Analysis Project, an exhaustive study of each of the agency's more than 4,500 bus stops and transit centers.

In 1988, Robert became a distinguished member of the National Safety Council Million-Mile Safe Driver club for driving more than one million miles without being involved in a preventable accident. This April, he achieved 24 years of safe driving at HART.

When Robert was just 17 years old, he served our country by enlisting in the Army and becoming a member of the 101st Airborne Division.

Robert is regarded by his wife as a dedicated family man and has a daughter, a son and two grandsons who all love him dearly. In his leisure time, Robert enjoys karaoke, fishing, hunting, woodwork, camping, cooking out and tending to his landscaping.

"HART is fortunate and honored to have a dedicated employee like Robert as part of our team," commented HART Chief Executive Officer David Armijo. "Robert is a shining example of the many able professionals behind the wheels of HART buses every day and we congratulate him on this much-deserved award."

The mission of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) is to provide public transportation services which are safe, dependable and cost effective, thereby enhancing the quality of life in our community.

Bicycle Bash by the Bay Deemed a Success

The Bicycle Bash by the Bay was held on Sunday, November 4 at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg. Seven bicycle shops that comprise the South West Florida Bicycle United Dealers (SWFBUD) played host to some 2,500-3,000 people who celebrated bicycling as a beautiful way to live. Alan Snel, event organizer, deemed the event a success. "They arrived on all types of chariots -- the roadies, and the recumbent riders, along with the lowriders and BMXers and the mountain bikers and the fat-tire cruisers and the hybrids."

Organizers of Tampa BayCycle were on hand to promote participation in the Elite 100 or 1,001 friends and the 2008 event schedule. During May 2008 a variety of events will take place promoting cycling to work, school, or play. For more information go to www.tampabaycycle.com.
