The purpose of the Transportation Information Service newsletter
is to inform, update, and educate members of the New North Transportation
Alliance and the public on local mobility issues, projects and developments.
In This Issue:

Governor Bush on June 22 signed House Bill 7079 to
incorporate language into Section 316.083 of the Florida Statutes
designating minimum safe passing distance for vehicles overtaking
bicyclists. The last-minute resolution was adopted as an amendment to the
Senate bill sent to the Florida House of Representatives.
The wording is “The driver of a vehicle overtaking a
bicycle or other nonmotorized vehicle must pass the bicycle or other
nonmotorized vehicle at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet between the
vehicle and the bicycle or other nonmotorized vehicle.” The language is
effective October 1.

The Fowler Avenue pedestrian bridge officially opened on August 24, 2006.
The bridge is the first free-standing, public pedestrian bridge in
Hillsborough County, and connects the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)
to the University of South Florida and Pizzo Elementary School. The bridge
allows school children and college students the ability to cross Fowler
Avenue through a crossing separate from the street.
Hillsborough County, in collaboration with the Florida
Department of Transportation, the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning
Organization, MOSI, USF and the Hillsborough County School Board worked
together to build the bridge.
