The purpose of the Transportation Information Service newsletter
is to inform, update, and educate members of the New North Transportation
Alliance and the public on local mobility issues, projects and developments.
In This Issue:

Interested in what’s happening with the Busch Boulevard
or Bruce B. Downs projects?
Now, two new listserv options for discussing issues and
staying updated regarding projects in the New North area are available.
A listserv is a communication tool that allows its
members to post questions, suggestions, or news to a large group of people
at the same time. When information is submitted to the listserv, it is
distributed to all of the members on that list. A listserv typically targets
predetermined topics and discussions.
Joining the listserv is easy. Go to
www.newnorthalliance.org and enter your name and email in the designated
box. You can join one or both of the discussion groups. As soon as you
receive your confirmation, you can connect with other members.

Edward (Ned) L. Baier

He has worked in urban planning for 19 years since moving
to Florida from Minnesota. Ned is a certified urban planner and serves as
the Manager of the Hillsborough County Planning & Growth Management
Department. At Hillsborough County, Ned developed a team of professionals
and improved transportation planning and development review for Hillsborough
County. In this capacity, he has obtained transportation funding for many
projects and diligently works with citizen groups on solutions to
transportation concerns.
Ned’s latest hobby is Dragon Boat Racing and he is a
member of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club. He practices with his team
downtown on the Hillsborough River and his recent races have included Miami,
Traveratas, and Tampa. The International Dragon Boat Races are coming to
Tampa in August, 2006!

Cindy Wooten and Lori Hamm both know the benefits of carpooling. The two
began commuting together last year from Plant City to the University of
South Florida. They even arranged their work hours so that they could
carpool five days a week.
“One week Lori will pick me up and drive her vehicle and the next week I
pick her up and drive my vehicle,” says Cindy. “Whenever we have conflicting
appointments, we simply rearrange the schedule to best fit both of us.”
Although both admit to giving up some freedom of individualism, they usually
take care of similar errands on the way home which makes the trip even more
productive and reduces their cost at the pump.
Both Cindy and Lori signed up for the Emergency Ride Home program offered by
Bay Area Commuter Services (BACS). It provides a sense of security in case
one of them ever needs to leave work early due to unforeseen circumstances.
