A Look Back on Commuter Choice's Week

Last month NNTA was buzzing around north Tampa encouraging employees and residents to try alternative transit during Commuter Choices Week (CCW).  Those who signed pledge cards promised to bike, car/vanpool, walk or ride the bus one day during CCW. Some visitors tested their skills on transit related games to win one of many prizes.  Get the scoop on each event below.

University Mall USF Bull’s Country Event     9/25

In the cool air conditioning among the hustle of mall shoppers, University Mall hosted a Bull’s Country Event.  It was complete with cheerleaders, a band, USF department booths and snacks.  Many shoppers and vendors stopped by to inquire about ways to improve their commute!

USF Benefits Fair @ USF Special Events Center     9/29

State employees attended this fair to discover the plethora of opportunities available to them through USF and the state, including commute options!  This event was tremendous fun as employees and benefit providers had a pleasant environment to interact, socialize and learn.

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)      9/30

Employees of FDOT were in for a welcome surprise when they went to lunch.  With Halloween treats and squishy stress dollars in hand, we were prepared to persuade many employees to sign Commuter Choices Week pledge cards.  To our surprise, it did not take much persuading, considering many employees already carpool and a number of others were interested in learning how they could find someone to carpool with – and take advantage of the reserved carpool spaces at FDOT.

Moffitt Cancer Research Center, Transportation Day     10/4

Lingering in the halls outside the Moffitt cafeteria was the savory smell of a warm lunch… and our NNTA booth!  Employees worked up an appetite for information on their commuting options.  We were able to uncover quite an interest in vanpools and carpools among employees.

USF Transportation Fair     10/5

MLK Plaza was bustling with employees and students visiting the Transportation Fair during Patio Tuesday.  Along with NNTA, the USF Bike Club, HARTline, FDOT, American Lung Association and BACS set up tables and answered questions from passers-by.  The warm sun, cool breeze and friendly faces made it a great day to be out and about, discovering new ways to get around!

Over 80 people pledged to try alternative transportation during NNTA’s Commuter Choices Week events. Half of those pledging registered for the regional rideshare database and half of those that registered for the database found carpool matches!

Thanks to those who hosted Commuter Choices Week events and donated prizes.  If you are an employer and would like to host an event at your worksite, or if you are a commuter interested in finding out about your commute options, please call 974-9799 or email Sobush@cutr.usf.edu.                             Student pledges to try other transit modes.

Cost Affordable Transportation Changes

“Know what's weird? Day by day, nothing seems to change, but pretty soon...everything's different.” – Calvin & Hobbes

North Tampa commuters and residents cannot help but recognize the same old traffic problems.  Community growth and lack of options makes congestion unavoidable.  The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Transportation heard your pleas and incorporated many area projects in their 2025 Long Range Transportation Plan.  Many area projects have also made it to the next phase in the long-range planning process, the Cost Affordable Plan (representing the balance between investments in transportation modes and predicted funding), putting them one step closer to seeing improvements.
