Addressing
Safety on Our Roadways
According to the 2002 Mean Streets report, a publication of the Surface
Transportation Policy Project, the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater
metropolitan area ranked as the 2nd most dangerous large metropolitan area
for walking in the United States, with 178 pedestrian deaths in 2000 and
2001 combined. Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa had 52
pedestrian fatalities and 9 bicycle fatalities in 2002 alone. The number
of bicycle and pedestrian injuries reported during the City and County for
the same year topped 960. Sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, lighting and
other design features can be used to improve safety conditions for
pedestrians and bicyclists.
The following questions and answers provide information on how
pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers can request safety improvements or
report a safety problem to the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County.
Q: How can I report a non-working street light?
A: Most street lights located in Hillsborough County and the City of
Tampa are maintained by TECO Electric. To report a street light that is
out or malfunctioning, record the 10-digit number on the tag of the light
pole
that is out or malfunctioning and call (813) 223-0800 or complete the form
located on TECO's website: http://www.tampaelectric.com/TEHMProductsServices.html.
Q: How can I request street lights for my neighborhood?
A: If you live in Hillsborough County, you can contact the County's
Traffic Services Division about their "Residential Street Light
Program" - a program of the Public Services Department that helps
neighborhoods get street lights. For detailed information, call 272-5551.
In the City of Tampa, request street lights for a dark area on a public
street by filling out the form with the City's Customer Service Center
located at www.tampagov.net.
Q:
How do I request a new pedestrian crosswalk or new roadway pavement
markings (centerline
A: The City of Tampa has a formal system for these types of
requests. Visit the customer service section of the website, www.tampagov.net
and do a search for the Street Marking Request form. Once you find the
form, fill it out, and submit it to have a City official to review your
request. In Hillsborough County, contact the Hillsborough Information Line
at 272-5900 to be connected with the appropriate department.
Q: How do the City and County decide which intersections need a
traffic signal?
A: Traffic signal installations must conform to the US Department of
Transportation FHA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. You can
request a signal installation in the City of Tampa through their Customer
Service Center at www.tampagov.net.
The City will then conduct a comprehensive investigation of traffic
conditions and physical characteristics of the location, traffic &
pedestrian volumes, speed of vehicles on the uncontrolled approaches, and
a one year accident analysis to determine if a traffic signal installation
is necessary and feasible. In Hillsborough County, contact the
Hillsborough Information Line at 272-5900 to be connected with the
appropriate department.

"Commuter
Center" Brochure Rack at Mall Recently Removed
 |
You may have noticed that the Transportation
Information Center brochure rack at the University Mall is no longer
located at the Mall's Guest Services Booth. The rack was removed to
make guest services staff more accessible to shoppers. Commuters can
still obtain HARTline bus route maps and schedules by requesting
them from the guest services staff.
The mall is designing a new brochure rack that will be located in
the vicinity of the Guest Services Booth in the near future. This
rack will hold the carpool, vanpool, and Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH)
brochures and will provide space for mall stores to distribute
information. In the meantime, commuters looking for carpool,
vanpool, and GRH information can request brochures from guest
services staff.

22nd
Master Plan Document Online
The 22nd Street Master Plan calls for on-street parallel
parking, bus bays, large sidewalks on each side of the roadway, and
bicycle lanes. These design elements will make traveling along 22nd Street
safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. On-street parallel parking will
provide needed parking for future business while also calming traffic. Bus
bays will allow traffic to flow more smoothly by creating a place where
buses can load and unload without blocking the roadway. More information
on the 22nd Street Master Plan can be obtained from Hillsborough County's
Community Planning website: www.hccommunityplanning.com.
