The purpose of the TIS Update is to inform, update, and educate members of the University North
Transportation Initiative and the public on local mobility issues,
projects and developments.

What
is the New North Transportation Alliance As
of February 2003, the University North Transportation Initiative
(UNTI)
will be known as the New North Transportation
Alliance.
The New North
Alliance will continue to serve the business, residents, and
commuters in the New North (University North). The New North
includes the areas north of Busch Boulevard, east of 22nd Street,
south of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, and west of I-75. This
includes the area surrounding Busch Gardens, the University Area,
and New Tampa. The service area falls in a number of
government jurisdictions, including Hillsborough County, the City of
Tampa, and the City of Temple Terrace.

Commuting
Options & Supporting Strategies
Ridesharing
& Guaranteed Ride Home
Commute Option:
Ridesharing
|
What is it?
|
|
Ridesharing
- carpooling or vanpooling - is an excellent way to reduce
traffic congestion & improve air quality.
To begin ridesharing, an employee will need to find
people to carpool or vanpool with.
Employees might already work with someone who lives
near their home and has a similar work schedule.
If not, however, rideshare matching is available
through Bay Area Commuter Services, BACS. Employees can contact the New North Transportation
Alliance, or BACS (1800-998-RIDE), to be entered in the
rideshare database. If
an employee’s schedule, home location, and work address
match that of others, they will be given information about the
matches so that they can form a ridesharing group.
Employers
can encourage ridesharing by offering preferential parking to
rideshare groups, by allowing employees some flexibility in
their schedules when they are trying to form a rideshare
group, and by offering subsidized or pre-tax vanpool benefits.
|
|
What Can It Do For You?
|
|
Rideshare
matching:
·
Makes it easier
for employees to find carpool or vanpool partners
·
Motivates
employees hesitant to switch to carpooling
·
Encourages more
ridesharing which can in turn reduce employee stress and save
businesses money on the costs of creating more parking for
single occupant vehicles
·
Tailors the use
of commute alternatives to employees’ personal needs
|
|
What Do You Have To Do?
|
|
Contact the New North Transportation Alliance
which will:
·
Provide you with brochures on carpooling and
vanpooling that you can give to your employees
·
Organize transportation fairs at your work
place so that employees can register for the database on site
·
Create zip code maps that illustrate the number of employees that live
near each other
|
Supporting
Strategy: Guaranteed
Ride Home (GRH)
|
What is it?
|
|
Employees
who use commute choices are often concerned about how to get
home if they work late or have a personal emergency.
Through the regional guaranteed ride home (GRH)
program, workers get the reassurance they need.
The
GRH program offers up to 8 free taxi rides a year for those
commuters who use an alternative mode of transportation
(walking, biking, transit, ridesharing) to get to and from
work at least two days a week. |
|
What Can It Do For You?
|
|
A GRH program can:
·
Reassure workers who are worried about not
having their own car in case of an emergency
·
Increase employee interest in carpooling or vanpooling
|
|
What Do You Have To Do?
|
|
·
Contact the New North Transportation
Alliance at 813-974-9799 to receive brochures on the GRH
program.
·
Promote GRH to your employees as a way of getting them to
use an alternative mode.

Bicycle
Commuting: Worksite Amenities & Incentives
Do
any members of your workforce live within biking distance to work?
Chances
are, the answer is yes.
There
may even be people in your workforce that would be more likely to
bike to work if certain facilities and policies were in place to
support them.
By
supporting bicycle commuters at a worksite, businesses can reduce
the number of parking spaces needed.
Why
do some employees choose to bike to work?
 |
To
reduce dependency on their personal vehicles – save on gas
& other expenses. |
 |
To
maintain an active lifestyle – bicycle commuting can be good
exercise. |
Employers
can facilitate bicycle commuting by adding certain amenities or by
changing policies.
 |
Bicycle
racks or bike lockers provide a secure location for bikes to be
locked up during the workday. |
 |
Shower
facilities allow workers to ride to work in the proper gear and
then clean up/change into their workday clothing. |
 |
Giving
bicycle commuters some flexibility in their schedules may make
it easier for them to make the change from driving to biking to
work. |
 |
Incentive
programs, such as parking cash out, may also be implemented to
provide employees
with a financial incentive to bicycle commute. |
*
Bicycle commuters who ride to work at least twice a week are eligible
for the regional Guaranteed Ride

Vanpool
Riders Wanted:
Decrease commute
costs, improve use of travel time
A vanpool traveling from Sarasota/Bradenton to the USF Area,
including the VA Hospital and Telecom Parkway is seeking riders. Work hours are from 7:00am - 4:30 pm. Call 813-282-8200 for more information.
