What commute options are available to employees?

The availability of the following commute options allow employees to find personalized transportation solutions to meet their travel needs.   Employers can offer supporting programs to make each of the following options more feasible and appealing to their employees.

Transit           Vanpool            Carpool

Bike/Skate/Walk        Compressed Work Schedule       Telework

Transit

In the New North area, employees who use transit travel all or a portion of the commute on buses or shuttles. Some programs employers can offer to support transit include Commuter Choice Tax Incentives, transit pass programs, and guaranteed ride home (a program offering an emergency ride home for employees with personal emergencies or unplanned overtime).

Vanpool

A vanpool is a commuter highway vehicle, driven by an employee, carrying 7-15 commuters to and from work.  Often, large numbers of employees live in close proximity to one another and can take advantage of vanpooling to make their commute less stressful and often less costly than driving alone.  Employers can support vanpools by offering Commuter Choice Tax Incentives, preferential parking, vanpool start up assistance and guaranteed ride home.

Carpool

A carpool consists of 2-6 employees sharing a ride in a private vehicle. Employers can encourage and support carpooling among their employees by offering preferential parking, ridematching assistance, guaranteed ride home, and parking cash-out (employees can "cash out" the value of employer-provided parking by foregoing parking and receiving the taxable cash value of the parking in return).

Bicycle/Walk/Skate

Employees that live near work may choose to bike, walk, or skate to work as a way of getting exercise and avoiding costs associated with driving or riding the bus.  Providing secure bike facilities and showers makes it more appealing for many to bike to work.  Employers may also support these modes by providing parking cash-out and guaranteed ride home.

Compressed Work Schedule

A compressed work schedule allows employees to work the same number of hours in a shorter work week.  Popular compressed work schedules include the 4/40 (40 hours in 4 days) and the 9/80 (80 hours in nine days - one day off ever other week).  Like telework, compressed work schedules are popular with many employees and may be useful to employers in recruiting and retaining valuable employees.

Telework

Telework brings the job to the person rather than bringing the person to the job. In addition to eliminating the daily commute, teleworking can reduce the demand for office space and parking facilitates.  Telework is often done on a part time basis - with employees telecommuting just a few days a week.  Offering telework, may prove valuable to some companies when recruiting new employees or trying to retain existing ones.
