What
does the Best Workplaces for CommutersSM
designation mean?
Participants in Best Workplaces for Commuters recognize that
commuter assistance programs provide a valuable benefit to
employees. The "Best Workplaces for CommutersSM"
designation is a mark of excellence for environmentally and
employee-friendly companies.
This voluntary National Standard of Excellence for
employer based benefits was established by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Commission (EPA) and the U.S. Department of
Transportation (DOT) in a nationwide effort to accomplish the
following:

Cut
air pollution and global warming pollution |
 |
Reduce
traffic congestion |
 |
Increase
employee job satisfaction |
 |
Improve
employee recruiting and retention |
 |
Reduce
parking space demand and expenses |
 |
Cut
taxes for both employers and employees |
 |
Publicly
recognize employers for being commuter-friendly and
environmentally responsible
|

How
can my organization gain the "Best Workplaces for CommutersSM"
designation?
1. Participating employers agree to
offer one of the following benefits at each qualifying worksite:

Tax-free
transit passes |
 |
Tax-free
vanpool benefits |
 |
Telecommuting,
or |
 |
Parking
cash out (allowing employees to trade free parking for the
cash equivalent |
2.
Participating employers also agree to provide three additional
commuter benefits from a list of many options,
including:
 |
Shuttles to and
from transit stations |
 |
Ridesharing or
carpool matching (can be done through the regional ridesharing
agency, Bay Area Commuter Services) |
 |
Compressed work
schedules |
 |
Preferred or
reduced-cost parking for carpools and vanpools |
 |
Facilities or
financial assistance for biking or walking to work |

How
can the New North Alliance help?
The Best Workplaces for
CommutersSM
campaign requires employer to report program progress and success to the
CUTR once a year. The New North Alliance can provide employers with surveys to
administer to employees in a variety of formats:

Once an employer has chosen a format and their
employees have responded to the employee mode share survey, New
North Alliance staff will put the information collected in a
format accepted by the
EPA.
